Some nights aren't about work. What I'm listening to, and what comes off the rig: an iPad running a Korg M1, a laptop that plays along over Wi-Fi MIDI, a Yamaha mixer into the machine.

The rig

  • Korg M1 on an iPad

    The sounds. The same synth that was on half the records I grew up loading into the arena, now running on a tablet on the desk.

    Keys

  • Wi-Fi MIDI

    A laptop sends notes to the iPad over the house network, so a second player can sit in from the other side of the room. Program changes, patch switching, two hands' worth of parts.

    Wire

  • Mixer to tape

    A Yamaha mixer into the recording machine. Bass takes first, lead on top, drums last. Nothing fancy, nothing lost.
